The General Customs of the Republic thwarted an attempt to illegally export more than 3,800 cigars from the country to Panama through the José Martí International Airport in Havana.

William Pérez González, first deputy chief of the Customs of Cuba, reported that the merchandise was seized and the incident was reported to the police as part of the efforts against the illegal trafficking of this exportable commodity.

According to the official, combating this type of operation is a priority for customs authorities due to the economic value of tobacco and its frequent connection to smuggling networks that operate from the country's points of departure.

This new case comes just days after the General Customs of the Republic detected the illegal export of over 4,000 authorizations of Cuban tobacco brands that were hidden inside several books.

The material was found during a routine check at Havana International Airport on a traveler who was attempting to covertly take the stamps out of the country.

After the detection, the permits were confiscated and the incident was reported to the Police.

This new case adds to other recent actions at the Havana airport, including the detection of a drug trafficking operation in which methamphetamine was found hidden in a passenger's luggage, amidst increased scrutiny on international flights.
