Valentine's Day in 2026 will be marked for Cubans by a significant day of power outages.

According to the daily report from Unión Eléctrica, for this Saturday's peak hours, a capacity of 1389 MW is anticipated against a maximum demand of 3100 MW, resulting in a shortfall of 1711 MW. If the expected conditions persist, a deficit of 1741 MW is predicted during this period.

On Friday, Cubans experienced blackouts for 24 hours, with a peak impact due to a generation capacity deficit of 1719 MW at 7:20 PM.

The energy production from the 50 new photovoltaic solar parks was 4,711 MWh, with a maximum output of 770 MW recorded during peak hours for this generation source, the statement specifies.

Likewise, the availability of the SEN at 6:00 AM was 1260 MW, with demand at 1851 MW, resulting in an impact of 596 MW.

For the half-hour period, a disruption of 750 MW is estimated.

Unit 5 of the CTE Mariel, Unit 2 of the CTE Santa Cruz, Unit 2 of the CTE Felton, and Unit 6 of the CTE Antonio Maceo are still out of service; Unit 5 of the CTE Nuevitas and Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Cienfuegos are undergoing maintenance.

In this way, 437 MW are out of service due to limitations in thermal generation.

The current landscape reflects how the lack of maintenance, planning, and management capacity on the part of the authorities has led the island to a sustained energy collapse, leaving millions of Cubans exposed to constant blackouts that impact homes, public services, and the national economy.
