Amid the multiple justifications—sometimes hard to believe—that the regime has offered for years to explain the blackouts in Cuba, the most recent one in Sancti Spíritus could be among the most unusual, regardless of whether the event occurred as reported: a frog is said to have caused the interruption of electrical service in several circuits of the provincial capital.
According to Radio Sancti Spíritus, the provincial Electric Company explained that the incident occurred at Substation 2 of 110 kV, when the amphibian came into contact with the bushing or insulator of the plant's transformer, a component that supplies power to the technological part of the facility.
That contact generated a strong electric arc that caused the main bus to open and disconnected the associated circuits, leaving several areas without service.
After the breakdown, the Rolando Brito Brigade, part of the Base Business Unit Operations Center, was activated.
The specialists are working on replacing fuses, performing technical cleaning of the affected area, and conducting tests on the transformer to ensure it has not sustained damage from the arc flash.
"The work is already underway to provide a solution as quickly as possible," the entity assured in a note on its Telegram and WhatsApp channel, where they also apologized to the public for the inconveniences caused, reported Radio Sancti Spíritus.
The entity assured that its teams are working to restore the service as quickly as possible and apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused.
In a country marked by prolonged blackouts, generation shortages, and recurring breakdowns, the episode has drawn attention for its uniqueness, especially since in the past the "causes" of blackouts have been "surprising" to many.
