In 2025, Amazon became the largest company in the world by sales volume, surpassing Walmart for the first time in over a decade.
The milestone in Amazon's sales marks the end of 13 consecutive years in which the traditional retail giant topped the global list.
CNN reported that Amazon recorded sales of 717 billion dollars in 2025, while Walmart reached 713 billion in the same period. The difference signifies a symbolic shift in global commerce leadership.
Although Amazon and Walmart compete directly in retail, Amazon's growth in areas such as cloud computing, advertising, and subscriptions was decisive. Its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division generated nearly $129 billion in sales.
In addition, the company generated over 100 billion combined from advertising and Prime. However, the majority of its revenue, 464 billion, came from online stores, physical stores, and third-party sellers.
In contrast, more than 90% of Walmart's sales come from its physical stores and websites. Still, the company is experiencing one of its best moments. Its market value recently surpassed one trillion dollars, and sales in the U.S. grew by 4.6% in the last quarter.
