An electrical contact accident at the Habana 220 kV Substation caused disruptions to the electricity service this Friday in several municipalities in central Havana, as well as in Artemisa and Mayabeque.

The official journalist reported on his Facebook profile that the incident occurred at 11:27 AM and resulted in an injured worker from the brigade.

The employee was immediately referred to an emergency medical service. So far, no details have been provided regarding their health status.

Everything seems to indicate that the accident caused the interruptions in the electrical supply that affected numerous customers in the capital and nearby provinces. Authorities have reported that the service is in the process of being restored.

Substations affected by automatic tripping

A few minutes earlier, the journalist himself had reported that several substations were affected by an Automatic Frequency Discharge (DAF). Among those mentioned were Plaza, Príncipe, Tropical, and Rincón de Boyeros.

As a result, areas in the municipalities were left without service:

  • Boyeros
  • Beach
  • Marianao
  • Plaza of the Revolution
  • Cerro
  • Centro Havana

Lázaro Guerra Hernández, general director of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, reported that the primary fault may have originated at the CUJAE substation.

At 9:59 a.m., the UNE reported the shutdown of Unit 1 of the CTE Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, which entered into emergency mode due to a failure in the speed regulator. This incident led to the DAF's intervention in the system and affected an additional 44 MW that were in the process of being restored.

Technicians from the national electric power system are working on locating and resolving the issues to restore service as quickly as possible.

The incident once again highlights the fragility of the Cuban electrical system, which in recent months has experienced multiple interruptions and technical failures that repeatedly impact the population.
