The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) announced this Tuesday that there are no plastic cards available in Cuba for the production of identity cards, a situation attributed to the "escalation of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade" imposed by the United States government.

In a note published by the official profile , the Directorate of Identification, Immigration, and Foreign Affairs (DIIE) announced "the unavailability of cards for the preparation of identity documents," which affects the issuance of the card in its current format.

According to the statement, individuals who previously requested a new identification card due to loss, change of address, deterioration, or other reasons and are still awaiting the process can go to the relevant offices to collect a Certification of Identity, if needed.

The MININT assured that the Processing Offices will continue to accept applications for both identity cards and minor cards. However, applicants will also receive a provisional certification until they can obtain the definitive document.

Additionally, the institution explained that the identification documents currently in use will remain valid, regardless of the expiration date they display, as long as they allow for the full identification of the holder. This includes both the booklet format card and the plasticized version.

The entity added that the temporary modifications will be communicated to the organs and agencies of the Central State Administration that provide services to the population, with the aim of adjusting their protocols.

The organization indicated that once the country has the necessary materials, the production of identity cards and minor cards will resume, and the estimated date for their collection will be communicated in a timely manner, taking into account the volume of accumulated requests.

The difficulties in obtaining an identity card are nothing new. Last September, a young Cuban shared the ordeal she experienced to renew her document, facing endless lines, system outages, and more than a month of waiting to collect the final card.

The new interruption in the issuance of official documents occurs amid a deep economic crisis on the Island, characterized by a shortage of basic supplies, failures in essential services, and logistical difficulties that directly impact the daily lives of citizens. So far, authorities have not specified how long the lack of cards will last or how many applications are still pending.
