The Cuban baby Darwin Daniel Sotolongo Cedres, 10 months old, died after spending several months in critical condition without being able to receive the surgery he needed to treat a severe respiratory condition in Camagüey.
The death of the minor was confirmed by journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, who had previously reported the child's mother's complaint about the impossibility of performing the surgery within the island's healthcare system.
"Unfortunately, the little angel did not survive. He couldn't withstand abandonment, the poor management of the Cuban healthcare system, nor the ineptitude of those who should have guaranteed him the care he needed in Camagüey. An innocent life that was just beginning slips away, a child who deserved to grow up, laugh, and live," emphasized the journalist, deeply sensitive to cases like this.
According to what the mother, Elizabeth Cedres Torres, had explained, her son had been hospitalized for about four months in the intensive care unit of the Camagüey Pediatric Hospital, where he depended on life support to breathe.
The minor was suffering from grade 4 tracheal stenosis, a severe congenital malformation that causes a critical narrowing of the trachea and severely compromises breathing.
According to the mother's testimony, doctors and health authorities informed her that the necessary surgery could not be performed in Cuba due to a lack of resources and specialists for this type of intervention.
In light of that situation, Cedres Torres sought help so that his son could undergo surgery abroad and assured that he had all the medical documentation confirming the diagnosis and the urgency of the procedure.
For weeks, the woman publicly reported that her son's life was in danger while she waited for a solution that would allow the necessary surgery to take place. Ultimately, the child passed away without the surgical intervention being carried out.
