Cuba began on Wednesday the protocols to try to restore the National Electric System (SEN) after a disconnection that caused a widespread blackout in much of the country.

La Unión Eléctrica (UNE) informed that recovery operations for the system have already begun with the start-up of Energás Boca de Jaruco, one of the key facilities for restarting electricity generation.

According to the official update, efforts are also underway to supply energy to unit 3 of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermal power plant, with the aim of starting the commissioning process for that plant.

The authorities also indicated that unit 1 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant, known as Felton, is in operation and is supplying power exclusively to the eastern region of the country.

In the province of Las Tunas, there is an available electrical system, although the substations have not yet been powered, which is why the service has not been restored for consumers.

The UNE stated that the process of recovering the national electrical system is progressing gradually through technical protocols aimed at resynchronizing the power generation plants and restoring the electrical grid in the country.

Vicente de la O Levy, Minister of Energy and Mines, reported on X that they are working "on the restoration of the National Electric System amidst a complex energy situation. The ENERGAS Boca de Jaruco startup has already begun. Felton 1 continues to generate."

A new massive blackout in Cuba

A failure at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, the largest in Cuba, caused the disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) from Camagüey to Pinar del Río, as reported by the Electric Union.

"A disconnection of the National Electroenergetic System occurred from Camagüey to Pinar del Río. The disconnection is due to the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant caused by a leak in the boiler at 12:41. All protocols for restoring the SEN are already activated," noted the statement.

The General Director of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, specified that the service has been interrupted from the western area of Las Tunas to Pinar del Río, while the system remains connected from the eastern part of Las Tunas to Guantánamo.

The official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso reported that, as a result of the technical incident, the radio and television signal was interrupted due to issues related to the failure of the electrical system.
