Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez lashed out at Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, accusing him of "cynically lying" following the decision to expel the Cuban ambassador in Quito and the rest of the island's diplomatic staff.
Rodríguez reacted on social media X after Noboa justified the measure by alleging supposed interference from Cuban diplomats in political and violent activities within the South American country.
"The President of Ecuador is known for his tendency to disregard and violate International Law, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," wrote the head of Cuban diplomacy.
The chancellor also recalled the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito in 2024, an event that sparked strong international criticism, and stated that this episode serves as evidence of the Ecuadorian government's disregard for diplomatic norms.
“Now he cynically lies, with concocted excuses about the actions of the Cuban diplomatic staff in that country, and boasts about having expelled them,” Rodríguez added.
The Cuban official also accused Noboa of displaying "evident servility" towards the United States.
The chancellor's statements come after Noboa stated at a press conference that there was “considerable interference from Cuba in political activities, in dissent activities, and in some cases even violent ones.”
The Ecuadorian president stated that the decision to declare the Cuban ambassador and the rest of the diplomatic mission persona non grata was made after having "sufficient evidence."
According to Noboa, after receiving the expulsion notice, the Cuban diplomats began to destroy documents on the roof of the diplomatic headquarters.
The measure was formalized through a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, which ended the duties of the Ecuadorian ambassador in Havana, marking a new episode of diplomatic tension between the two governments.
