The new hotel K23, located in the Havana neighborhood of El Vedado, experienced a power outage this Thursday amid the serious energy crisis affecting Cuba, according to reports shared on social media.
A video shared online shows the moment when the modern building is left in the dark, highlighting that even newly constructed tourist facilities are not immune to the severe electrical issues affecting the country.
The K23 hotel, one of the latest projects in the tourism sector in Havana, stands at the intersection of 23rd and K streets, in one of the most iconic areas of Vedado.
The property is part of the Cuban regime's strategy to prioritize investment in hotel infrastructure, even amidst a deep economic crisis and basic service shortages affecting the population.
With over 40 floors, the building has become one of the tallest and most modern hotels in the Cuban capital, designed to attract international tourism and increase the accommodation capacity in the city.
So far, despite the crisis that keeps the population under blackouts of up to 20 hours, the tower had remained lit; however, it seems that this time it could not escape the energy crisis in Havana, which has lasted more than a week without electricity.
The blackout reported in the area reflects the magnitude of the energy crisis plaguing the island, where in recent days there have been prolonged power outages affecting both residential neighborhoods and state facilities in the capital.
The situation has sparked protests and demonstrations with pots and pans in various parts of Havana over the past week, as thousands of Cubans endure power outages that last for hours.
