The United States Embassy in Venezuela raised the American flag again on March 14, exactly seven years after it was lowered in 2019, in a symbolic gesture marking the restoration of diplomatic relations between Washington and Caracas.

On the morning of March 14, 2019, the American flag was lowered for the last time at the United States Embassy in Caracas. This morning, March 14, 2026, at the same hour, my team and I raised the flag of the United States, exactly seven years later,” the embassy noted in a message.

The diplomatic representation added that the act symbolizes “a new era for relations between the United States and Venezuela,” as their rapprochement has increased following the capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3rd.

The gesture comes after both countries agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations, which had been severed since 2019 during the Venezuelan political crisis.

Although the flag is once again waving at the diplomatic mission, the building is still undergoing renovations, so it is unclear when it will fully resume operations.

The restoration of relations occurs following several contacts between Washington and the Venezuelan government led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez, amidst a political landscape marked by changes in the country and new cooperation agreements.

The diplomatic break between the United States and Venezuela occurred in February 2019, when the government of Nicolás Maduro decided to sever relations with Washington amid the political crisis and the U.S. recognition of then-opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

The raising of the American flag in Caracas now represents one of the most visible symbols of the diplomatic thaw between the two countries after years of political confrontation.
