The number of injured individuals from the accident that occurred this Monday on the Central Highway, near the municipality of Santo Domingo in Villa Clara, has risen to 18 people, according to health authorities reported last night.

The update, provided to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) by the provincial Health Director, Leidy Saray Rodríguez Hernández, states that 16 of the injured required transfer to hospitals for specialized care.

Twelve adults remain under medical observation at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Clinical Surgical Hospital in Santa Clara, while four minors have been admitted to the José Luis Miranda Pediatric Hospital. According to the official report, all patients have multiple contusions but are stable and not in immediate danger.

Hours earlier, Lieutenant Colonel Heriberto Pérez de Prado, head of Transit for the PNR in Villa Clara, explained that the accident occurred when a truck transporting passengers and goods to Corralillo attempted to overtake another vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, and ultimately left the roadway, overturning.

The incident raised great concern among residents and social media users, who shared images and messages of support for the victims from the early hours. Initially, accounts from witnesses suggested that the driver had attempted to evade a motorcycle before losing control of the vehicle.

The case brings attention back to road safety in Cuba, where traffic accidents continue to be common amid deteriorating roads, poorly maintained vehicles, and risky maneuvers that, as in this instance, can end in tragedy.
