A man lost his life instantly this Sunday after being struck by a heavy cargo vehicle at kilometer 98 of the Vía Blanca, near the city of Matanzas.
The incident occurred specifically at the entrance of the Industrial Zone of the city, as detailed on social media by Periódico Girón.
According to the cited source, the incident occurred when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road without noticing the proximity of a trailer belonging to Empresa Rayonitro.
Due to the magnitude of the impact, the specialists from the Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM) who arrived at the scene could only certify the death.
Officials from the Ministry of Interior (MININT) cordoned off the area to conduct the necessary investigations, while authorities from the Party and the provincial Government came to the site to oversee the proceedings.
Traffic in the area remained disrupted while the necessary work was being carried out.
Victim's identity
Through social media, neighbors and acquaintances identified the deceased as Ramiro Molina, a resident of the Reparto Dubrocq, someone who was widely known and beloved in the area.
The news has sparked an intense debate among those who pointed to the lack of public lighting as a potential cause of the incident and those who described the victim's previous risky behaviors.
“We all knew Ramiro in this area of Versalles... it is known that he was an alcoholic and also had psychiatric issues. Apparently, Ramiro jumped in front of the car, and the driver tried to avoid him, but unfortunately, he was unable to do so,” commented a neighbor.
"The pedestrian wasn't crossing the street; he jumped in front of the truck. Even so, when the driver tried to dodge him, he kept running toward the truck... it's not the same to stop a small car as it is to stop a truck that weighs 20 tons," noted another internet user in the same thread.
Even relatives of the driver involved expressed their dismay. The driver's mother stated, "The pedestrian jumped in front of the truck, impossible to see from afar, and the driver was very cautious, in fact... my son is very affected."
Amid the speculations regarding the causes of the accident, the victim's sister requested respect for Ramiro's memory.
“He had his medical papers... my pain is unlike anything, but I ask for respect for my brother. A great human being”, he wrote.
On the other hand, a group of citizens pointed out that the poor conditions of the Vía Blanca facilitate this type of tragedy.
The lack of electricity and the complete lack of visibility were recurring issues in the complaints.
"A common denominator in the accidents of recent days: the blackout, the darkness, lack of electricity in the streets and public spaces," said two commentators. "That Vía Blanca has been in the dark for years... plus the poor condition. We have to be careful."
As of the closure of this note, there are no other confirmed details regarding the tragic event.
