The Cuban intellectual Alina Bárbara López Hernández denounced on Wednesday the disappearance of writer and activist Jorge Fernández Era, amid a backdrop of rising social tension and repression on the island.
According to what was expressed on Facebook, after communicating with fellow activist Laideliz Herrera Laza, it was confirmed that Fernández Era -a frequent victim of repression and arbitrary detentions by the government- remains missing.
"I just spoke with Laideliz Herrera Laza and she confirmed to me that my dear Jorge Fernández Era is still missing," she stated.
López Hernández also announced his intention to take to the streets again as a form of protest.
"I don't need an AKM to defend a friend; I will go out tomorrow morning to protest again," he declared, referencing the recent statements by the official singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez and the regime's calls to "defend the country against external threats" while suppressing critical voices.
The academic linked the current situation to the anniversary of the Protest of the Thirteen, drawing a parallel between historical moments of civic opposition in Cuba.
In her message, the intellectual launched harsh criticisms against the Cuban political system, which she accused of repressive practices.
"Dictatorships can be very diverse, but they have a family resemblance," he expressed.
He also concluded his publication with a clear call: “For the end of oppression. Freedom for Cuba.”
The complaint arises against a backdrop of power outages, protests, and growing social discontent, where activists and citizens have reported arrests and repressive actions following demonstrations in various parts of the country.
So far, there is no official confirmation from the Cuban authorities regarding the situation of Jorge Fernández Era.
