A strong seismic activity keeps eastern Cuba on alert, where hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded in recent hours, with reports of damage to homes and buildings.

Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), reported on Facebook this Friday that 907 aftershocks have been recorded in the Imías area of Guantánamo within a 24-hour period.

According to the specialist, several of these earthquakes have been felt by the population, while reports of minor damage have been received, primarily cracks in the walls of homes and other structures.

The expert also recalled the occurrence of two significant earthquakes in the region that coincide with this date, one west of Moa, with a magnitude of 4.3, and another southeast of the city of Guantánamo, both causing damage to buildings and assessed with an intensity of VI on macrosismic scales.

The persistence of the aftershocks reflects the seismic instability in this area of the eastern part of the country, where authorities and specialists continue to monitor for potential new events that could cause greater damage.

This situation arose from the main earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0, registered on March 17 southeast of Imías, the strongest one to occur in Cuba since November 2024 and preceded by foreshocks in February and March.

According to the Cuban News Agency, specialists from CENAIS indicate that this event only activated a segment of the Oriente fault, meaning that not all the accumulated energy in the area has been released, which keeps the possibility of continued seismic activity.

As a result, they warn that the aftershocks will continue and could cause additional damage to already weakened structures, so they insist on maintaining a perception of risk and avoiding staying in vulnerable buildings.
