Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), reported the ongoing strong seismic activity in eastern Cuba, with a total of 808 aftershocks recorded in the Imías area.
In a post on Facebook, the specialist shared the report from CENAIS detailing that these events are associated with the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred last Tuesday in that locality of Guantánamo province.
According to the report, the event with the highest magnitude in this sequence reached 4.6 and was felt in the areas of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Holguín, demonstrating the extent of the phenomenon in the eastern region.
The report also specifies that 188 earthquakes were recorded in Imías during the analyzed period, with magnitudes ranging from 0.8 to 4.6, while in other areas such as Santiago-Baconao, Moa-Purial, and Paso de los Vientos, movements were also detected, although in smaller numbers.
Additionally, seismic events were reported in the Caribbean area near Haiti, with magnitudes of up to 4.4, confirming tectonic activity in the region.
The persistence of these aftershocks draws the attention of specialists and authorities, in a context where such phenomena can last for days or weeks following a major earthquake.
