Members of the organization Cubans in Argentina for Freedom (CAL) called on President Javier Milei to expel the Cuban diplomatic corps accredited in that country, in an effort to pressure the Argentine government to take a stronger stance against the Havana regime.
The petition was submitted this Thursday at the Casa Rosada, where representatives of the group formally presented the document through the Entry Desk, according to Ariel Cabrera.
The text calls for declaring the Cuban ambassador and the rest of the diplomatic staff as persona non grata.
According to the initiative's promoters, the request responds to the need for consistency with the values of freedom and human rights upheld by the current Argentine administration, as well as concerns regarding the role of Cuban representation in the country.
The activist Luis Alberto Mariño Fernández confirmed on social media the delivery of the letter and promoted a petition campaign to gather signatures in support of the request.
The document, circulated on the platform Change.org, argues that the Cuban diplomatic mission in Buenos Aires has ceased to fulfill strictly diplomatic functions and has engaged in political influence activities, pointing to alleged connections with destabilization processes and intelligence networks.
The signatories also denounce historical precedents of support from the Cuban regime for armed movements in Argentina, as well as alleged acts of hostility against the Cuban community in the country, including intimidation during demonstrations.
The request also highlights the need to review the activities of the Cuban diplomatic personnel and calls for the closure of the office, considering it a threat to democratic order and national sovereignty.
The request is now in the hands of the Argentine Executive, which will need to assess the application within the framework of its competencies and the international rules governing diplomatic relations.
The request from the Cuban exile community to President Milei comes after two significant events.
On one hand, the Government of Costa Rica announced the closure of its embassy in Havana and requested the Cuban regime to withdraw its diplomatic staff from San José, in a decision that represents a strong political stance regarding the situation on the island.
While on the other hand, the Government of Ecuador declared the ambassador of Cuba in Quito a non grata person and all diplomatic, consular, and administrative staff of the mission.
