President Donald Trump announced this Wednesday that any country that supplies military weapons to Iran will immediately be subjected to a tariff of 50% on all goods sold to the United States, with no exclusions or exemptions.
The warning came through his platform Truth Social just hours after Trump agreed to a ceasefire effective for 14 days with Iran, mediated by Pakistan, which suspends bombings in exchange for negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Previously, Trump had imposed 25% tariffs on any country that purchased Iranian goods or services, a measure that now escalates significantly in light of the warlike context in the region.
The conflict escalated weeks ago when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, a joint campaign against Iranian targets, marking a turning point in the tensions between both nations.
In the diplomatic arena, Russia and China blocked a resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz in the UN Security Council, further complicating international efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
Days before the agreement, Iran had rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal, which extended the clashes until the two-week bilateral agreement mediated by Pakistan was finally reached.
"Any country that supplies military weapons to Iran will be immediately taxed, on all and each of the goods sold to the United States, at a rate of 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions," Trump wrote in his post.
