A traffic accident that occurred on Monday morning in the Las Nuevas area, municipality of La Sierpe, left three injured, one of them in critical condition, according to the newspaper Escambray citing sources from the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus.

The wounded were being transferred to that hospital center, the main medical reference in the province of Sancti Spíritus, while the health institutions in Sancti Spíritus prepared the necessary conditions for their care.

The Integrated Medical Emergencies System (SIUM) was activated immediately in response to the incident, although at the time of the initial publication, the causes of the accident and the types of vehicles involved had not been specified.

Las Nuevas is one of the six Popular Councils in the municipality of La Sierpe, which has the lowest population density in Sancti Spíritus, with just 16,042 inhabitants spread over an area of 1,034 km² in the southern part of the province.

The accident occurs within the context of a serious crisis of road accidents in Cuba. In 2025, road accidents resulted in 750 deaths and 6,718 injuries nationwide, with a total of 7,538 recorded incidents.

The year 2026 has also been tragic on Cuban roads.

In January, a massive accident in Camagüey left 38 injured, while in February a tragedy on the National Highway near Sancti Spíritus claimed four lives and left 17 injured, several of whom were treated at the Camilo Cienfuegos Hospital.

Just on Sunday, a massive bus accident in Cienfuegos left dozens injured, and on Monday, the first fatality from that incident was confirmed: Lorena Isabel Hernández Bassa, aged 34.

Cuban authorities attribute 72% of traffic accidents to human factors, primarily the disrespect for right of way, lack of attention while driving, and speeding. Motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians are involved in 63% of the incidents recorded on the Island.

The note about the accident in La Sierpe was published as "under construction," so updates on the condition of the injured and the causes of the incident are expected in the coming hours.
