A traffic accident that occurred early Thursday morning on the Corralillo Highway, in the Santa Teresa Farm area of the municipality of Quemado de Güines, resulted in two fatalities and 13 injuries, according to reported by the provincial broadcaster CMHW.
The vehicle involved was a ZIL-130 truck with license plate W009204, which was traveling from Santa Clara —the provincial capital of Villa Clara— to the rural community of Riquelme.
Sources from the Ministry of the Interior indicated that preliminary causes suggest a loss of control of the vehicle, although investigations are still ongoing.
The 13 injured individuals were taken to receive medical care at healthcare facilities in Santa Clara and Sagua la Grande, the two nearest cities with hospital capacity.
So far, the names of the fatalities have not been disclosed, nor has the total number of occupants that the truck was carrying at the time of the incident.
The ZIL-130 is a Soviet-origin truck widely used in Cuba, often modified with makeshift bodies for passenger transport, especially in rural areas and municipalities with a deficiency of public transportation.
Villa Clara has been the scene of several serious accidents involving passenger trucks this year.
On March 17, a truck overturned in Santo Domingo, leaving 18 injured; that vehicle was headed precisely towards Corralillo, the same road where this new accident occurred.
On February 13, a tragedy on the National Highway in Sancti Spíritus resulted in four deaths and 17 injuries, and the day before, an accident between a truck and a taxi on the highway claimed the life of one person.
The pattern reflects a structurally high rate of traffic accidents in Cuba. According to the National Road Safety Commission, in 2025 there were 7,538 traffic accidents registered across the country, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries, indicating an upward trend compared to previous years.
In January 2026, a mass accident resulted in two fatalities and 38 injuries, highlighting that the early months of the year have been particularly critical in terms of road safety.
The authorities have not yet provided additional details about the exact circumstances of the incident this Thursday, nor about the health status of the most seriously injured.
