Alexander Delgado is celebrating. The leader of Gente de Zona turns 47 this Friday, solidifying his status as one of the most recognized figures in Cuban urban music both on and off the island.

Born on August 21, 1979, in Havana, Alexander took his first steps in music in the late 90s, and in 2000 he founded Gente de Zona. What started within the Cuban urban scene ultimately became an international phenomenon.

The definitive breakthrough came with songs that are now part of the recent history of Latin music. In 2014, "Bailando," featuring Enrique Iglesias and Descemer Bueno, brought the group to a global audience and earned three Latin Grammys. Shortly after, "La Gozadera," featuring Marc Anthony, became another hit that solidified Gente de Zona's success outside of Cuba.

Since then, Alexander has shared music and the stage with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias, while Gente de Zona has continued to bring their unique blend of Cuban and urban sounds to stages around the world.

Another of the most important moments in his career came in 2021 with "Patria y Vida." Alexander and Randy Malcom participated alongside Yotuel, Descemer Bueno, Maykel Osorbo, and El Funky in the song that became a symbol of the protests on July 11 in Cuba and won two Latin Grammys. Since then, Delgado has publicly maintained a critical stance towards the Cuban government and has stated that he will not return to the island until it is free.

Outside of music, El Monarca has also explored his entrepreneurial side. At the end of 2024, he opened Lo D'Alex, his first restaurant in Miami. There, he celebrated his birthday last year surrounded by family and friends.

In his personal life, Alexander has been in a relationship with Cuban model Mily Alemán for years, with whom he has a son, Alex Jr. He is also the father of Kuki and Sofía.

Alexander turns 47 after a particularly active year. In 2025, he celebrated the 25th anniversary of Gente de Zona, launched the project Reparto by Gente de Zona alongside Randy, which aimed to support new voices in the Cuban urban genre, and this summer the duo toured Spain with an extensive tour.

At 47 years old and more than two decades since his early days in music, El Monarca continues to lead Gente de Zona, adding projects and sharing his music both inside and outside of Cuba.

Congratulations on your 47, Monarca!
