Preventive detention ordered for young individuals involved in the murder of a Cuban in Guyana

Two young individuals have been formally accused and sent to preventive detention for the murder of the Cuban citizen José Aurelio Ramírez, which took place on Sunday, April 13, in Melanie, East Coast Demerara, Guyana.

According to information provided by the Guyanese police on their official channels, the arrested individuals were identified as Tyrese Blair, nicknamed "Six", a 20-year-old unemployed man residing at Lot 44 Middle Walk, Buxton, and Omar Clayton Bacchus, a 21-year-old bricklayer living at Lot 121 of Paradise, both of African descent.

The suspects were arrested on April 14 and formally charged with the crime of "homicide in the course of or in furtherance of a robbery", under Section 100 (1)(c)(i) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

During the hearing held on Thursday, April 17, at the Magistrates' Court of Supervisory No. 1, presided over by Judge Sunil Scarce, the charges were read to them, although they were not required to plead guilty or not guilty. Both were remanded directly to prison.

The case has been postponed until May 22, 2025.

According to the police report, Ramírez and his partner, the also Cuban citizen Yolenny Pérez Martínez, were returning home after having shared some beers at a local bar.

Mohamed Ali, head of Pérez Martínez and owner of a catering business in Melanie, stated to the Guyanese media Stabroek News, that José Aurelio picked her up from work on Saturday night, and they both left around 9:00 p.m.

Pérez Martínez mentioned that they decided to stop at one of the bars located on Plaza de Melanie street, where they sat down to have some beers before heading back home. It was during that journey that the assault occurred.

According to the version that Pérez Martínez shared with her boss, a stranger snatched her purse and she instinctively ran after him. She didn't realize that her partner had been stabbed until she noticed the wounds.

“Everything happened very quickly,” she stated. “I didn’t understand how the robbery occurred; someone just approached and took his belongings. At that moment, he probably tried to defend himself. That’s when he was stabbed,” she said.

The thieves escaped from the location, taking the young woman's bag, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash, her mobile phone, her identity document, and her passport.

Preliminary reports indicated that Ramírez had multiple stab wounds in the chest, ribs, and chin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ramírez's body was transferred to the Memorial Gardens funeral home, where an autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause of death.
