A new billboard placed on the busy Palmetto Expressway in Miami has made a significant impact within the Cuban-American community, calling for the freedom of opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer and all political prisoners in Cuba.
"This sign is now up reminding the world that Cuba is a DICTATORSHIP, with hundreds of political prisoners," wrote Los Pichy Boys on their Instagram account, where they expressed their gratitude for the initiative.
The poster was funded by immigration lawyer Miguel Inda-Romero, known as the Sincere Lawyer.
Inda-Romero referred to Ferrer as "a true Cuban hero" who has sacrificed his life for the freedom of the country.
"Hopefully, he will come to know that thousands of people who drive on the Palmetto daily will see this sign and feel as much pride in being Cuban as José Daniel Ferrer," he wrote on his Instagram account.
He also mentioned other political prisoners such as Maykel Osorbo, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Lisandra Góngora, and Félix Navarro, and reiterated that "we cannot stop fighting."
The installation of this banner comes after the recent revocation of Ferrer's parole by the Cuban regime, based on accusations that have been widely challenged by human rights organizations.
Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), was sent back to prison for failing to appear before the court after his early release. He had himself reported on social media that he would not participate in what he considers an illegitimate process.
The opposition figure is a key player in the pro-democracy movement in Cuba and has been imprisoned multiple times for his activism. According to the organization Prisoners Defenders, by April 2025, Cuba counts at least 1,155 political prisoners.
This is not the first time that billboards have become a tool for political expression in South Florida.
In recent months, several billboards placed along the Palmetto Expressway have addressed issues related to repression in Cuba, voting under dictatorship, and political controversies in the Cuban-American exile community.
At the end of May, a billboard placed on the Palmetto Expressway in the Miami-Hialeah area caught the attention of the Cuban exile community with a powerful message directed at the regime of the Island: "In tyranny, there is no voting, no negotiations, and no plebiscite is accepted".
The message was complemented by a powerful prayer and call: "To do so would be complicity and betrayal."
The initiative generated various reactions on social media, where users expressed support or criticism of the message.
The new billboard in favor of Ferrer reaffirms the use of public space by the exile community to bring attention to the human rights situation in Cuba and keep the demand for freedom for political prisoners on the island alive.
