A Cuban identified as Greidys Sánchez issued a desperate cry from the La Covadonga hospital in Havana, where his father is hospitalized following surgery, without receiving the basic care or medication needed to save his life.
In a live video, Sánchez showed his father in bed 10 of the medical center, freshly operated on for 10 centimeters of intestine. “Here I have my dad vomiting fluid, no one is coming to the hospital. There is no metoclopramide, there are no medicines, there is no Levin,” he reported in distress and helplessness.
The man reported that the family had to purchase a stretcher with their own resources because there was none available at the hospital, but he assures that no one warned him that he also needed to obtain other supplies.
"If they had told me, I would have bought them. Just like I bought the trocar. But they didn't say anything to me until just now. How long does this go on?" he questioned.
A drama that is not isolated
Sánchez's complaint reflects the deep healthcare crisis that Cuba is experiencing, where families must bear the burden of obtaining the most basic necessities for their sick loved ones. Recently, other stories have revealed the same reality.
Just a few days ago, a young woman shared a desperate letter about her father suffering from kidney disease, who had no access to antibiotics in Cuban hospitals, while she watched him slowly deteriorate. “Daughter, your daddy is dying, please don’t let me die,” the man pleaded, as she recounted on social media.
Also in Havana, a video revealed an improvised dump at the gates of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, which has become a source of unhealthiness that stands in stark contrast to the official messages about the supposed “excellence in medicine” in Cuba.
Even voices close to the government, such as the journalist Yirmara Torres, have broken the silence with testimonies about the lack of medications, the collapse of basic services, and the desperation of the population.
"We are a worn-out, tired, tortured people... but our patience has its limits," he recently wrote on Facebook.
"Share this, I am living in full live and in direct. How long will this last?" implored Greidys Sánchez at the foot of her father's bed, which has become a symbol of a drama that thousands of Cuban families are experiencing.
