Havana was once again plunged into darkness this Monday following the unexpected shutdown of a generation unit, which resulted in a deficit of 150 MW and impacted several key substations, including Plaza, Príncipe, Boyeros, Tropical, Rincón, and Santiago, as by the Electric Company of the capital.

The outage, which occurred at 4:50 p.m., disrupted service in numerous circuits across the city and forced thousands of families in Havana to face another night marked by uncertainty.

The new outage comes just 24 hours after the blackouts caused by a failure at the Naranjito substation that left a significant part of the city without electricity and also affected the water supply in municipalities such as Plaza, Diez de Octubre, Centro Habana, and Habana Vieja.

This is the fourth massive blackout in less than a week, following last Saturday when four of the six main blocks of the electrical system went out of service and days earlier multiple neighborhoods in the capital reported prolonged blackouts, in contrast to the official triumphalism regarding the "recovery of the SEN".

The blackouts of recent days confirm that the technical reconnection of the National Electric System does not guarantee stability. With aging plants, lack of maintenance, and fuel shortages, the Cuban electric system remains on the brink of collapse, dragging the population into a life caught between promises of solutions and the certainty that darkness will return time and time again.

Frequently Asked Questions about Power Outages in Havana and the Energy Crisis in Cuba

What is the main cause of the blackouts in Havana?

The main cause of power outages in Havana is the unexpected shutdown of electricity generation units and failures at key substations, such as Naranjito. These issues are exacerbated by aging infrastructure, lack of maintenance, and fuel shortages, leaving the Cuban electrical system on the brink of collapse.

How does the energy crisis affect the residents of Havana?

The inhabitants of Havana face prolonged blackouts that disrupt daily life, affecting access to basic services such as water and electricity, in addition to causing issues with food preservation and the operation of essential medical equipment. These interruptions create an atmosphere of uncertainty and social unrest.

What measures is the Cuban government taking to address the energy crisis?

The Cuban government has tried to promote the use of renewable energy sources and has called for energy efficiency, but these measures have not been enough to resolve the structural collapse of the electrical system. Despite the addition of solar parks, the lack of investment and the deterioration of thermoelectric plants remain significant obstacles.

Why are blackouts so frequent in Cuba?

Frequent blackouts in Cuba are caused by the combination of an outdated electrical infrastructure, poor maintenance, fuel shortages, and high demand that exceeds the available generation capacity. These factors create a chronic energy deficit that affects the entire island.
