A Cuban citizen was detained during a security operation in the Mexican state of Tabasco, accused of alleged drug dealing, in an incident that adds to a concerning series of arrests of Cubans that have occurred in Mexico in recent days.

The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) of Tabasco reported that the arrest occurred during surveillance and crime prevention activities on Constitución Avenue in the Centro neighborhood, one of the most heavily trafficked areas of the state capital.

The detained individual was identified as Yosvany “N”, alias “Sosa”, 43 years old and of Cuban nationality. According to the official report, agents from the SSPC, in coordination with the Olmeca Tactical Reaction Interinstitutional Force (FIRT), carried out a preventive intervention that resulted in his apprehension.

During the review, the authorities seized several doses of a green dry herb with characteristics similar to marijuana, as well as a fanny pack and cash. Both the detainee and the evidence were made available to the competent authority to continue the investigations.

The operation involved the participation of state and federal forces, including elements from the Defense, Navy, National Guard, federal SSPC, and the state and national prosecutors' offices, who reiterated their commitment to strengthening the fight against health-related crimes in Tabasco.

This arrest takes place in a particularly delicate context for the Cuban community in Mexico. In less than a week, at least two other Cuban citizens have been detained in different parts of the country for high-profile incidents.

One of the most notable cases occurred in Cancun, where a Cuban identified as Remigio “N” was arrested for his alleged involvement with an international criminal network related to human trafficking and a branch of the Sinaloa cartel.

Authorities seized drugs, a weapon exclusively for military use, ammunition, and cash. Additionally, it was revealed that he had a criminal record in Florida and was being monitored by the FBI.

Days later, in the state of Chiapas, another Cuban, Ernesto “N”, 55 years old, was arrested after being accused of starting a fire in the town of Puerto Madero. Although he was initially detained for resisting authority, investigations link him to the burning of several garbage containers, an incident that caused public alarm and could lead to penalties of up to 40 years in prison.

The succession of these cases once again shines a spotlight on the situation of thousands of Cubans stranded or settled in Mexico, many of whom are driven by the economic crisis, repression, and the lack of opportunities on the island.

While the majority struggle to survive honestly in a hostile environment, these episodes fuel concern and stigma surrounding a migrant community that already faces multiple vulnerabilities.

Mexican authorities continue to investigate each of the cases.
