The authorities in Santiago de Cuba confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator of the murder of a young man in the town of Cuatro Caminos, in the municipality of Songo La Maya.

According to the official newspaper Sierra Maestra, in its printed version, the suspect was captured in less than seven hours after a police operation supported by the community, which was "shown off" as an achievement.

The state media reported that the victim, identified as Hernán Casternaux Serrano, 31 years old, died from gunshot wounds and that the weapon used in the crime was recovered during the arrest of the attacker.

The Revolutionary National Police has placed him at the disposal of the courts and ensured that he will be punished "with the severity outlined in the Penal Code."

The crime occurred in the early morning of Sunday in the town of Cuatro Caminos. Although Sierra Maestra did not provide details about the reasons behind the incident, family members reported that Casternaux intervened to stop a fight during a party when one of those involved went for a weapon and shot him in the head, causing instant death.

"The attacker fled the scene, but thanks to the swift action of the police, he was arrested a few hours later," specified a source connected to the investigation.

The police deployment included patrols in the area and searches in rural areas near the municipality of Songo La Maya.

The death of Casternaux has caused shock in the community. On social media, his cousin Zenia Kindelán Serrano mourned the loss: “They took Hernán from us, a noble person with a broad smile. He left two girls without a father and a devastated family.”

The young man, described as calm and hardworking, was mourned at home and buried in the Santana cemetery.

His death marks another blow for a family that had already experienced violence in the past: in 2019, Hernán's father, Alexis Casternaux Medina, was murdered by his partner and three accomplices in a case that shocked the province.

"First the father, and now the son. It's a pain that has no name," commented a close neighbor.
