The Republican congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, daughter of Cuban exiles, stated this Friday that the communist regime in Cuba "must disappear" as it poses a threat to the national security of the United States and has oppressed its own people for decades.
“For decades, Cuba has been a safe haven for our adversaries, terrorist organizations, and fugitives like police killer Joanne Chesimard. Cuba has helped Russia, China, and Iran establish military and intelligence presence in our hemisphere,” stated Malliotakis on her official X account @RepNicole.
The legislator, who represents New York in the House of Representatives, added that the regime "has murdered, imprisoned, and robbed its own people, just as happened to my family, who witnessed their home and small business being confiscated."
"For our national security and for the Cuban people, the murderous communist regime must go. Long live a Free Cuba!" concluded the congresswoman, referring directly to the historic slogan of the Cuban exile community in Miami.
Malliotakis's statements came after the release of a fact sheet from the U.S. Embassy in Havana regarding the new measures by President Donald Trump to confront the “threats posed by the Cuban government” in the hemisphere.
On Thursday, Trump signed a new executive order that sanctions governments and companies that maintain trade links with the Cuban military conglomerate GAESA, and threatened to increase tariffs on those who send oil to the island, reinforcing the pressure policy led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In the midst of the growing international isolation of Castroism, Washington reaffirms that its goal is to "free the Cuban people from the control of a criminal dictatorship that has exported repression, espionage, and misery throughout the region."
