The authorities of the Plaza de la Revolución municipality began the evacuation of vulnerable individuals on Saturday night due to the severe flooding reported in low-lying areas of the Havana coastline, near the iconic Malecón
Teams from the Red Cross and Civil Defense transported elderly individuals and people with reduced mobility to safe shelters, as the cold front affecting the western region brings strong winds and high waves along the northern coast of Cuba.
Sea incursions and strong winds in the capital
According to the Meteorological Institute, sea incursions intensified since the late afternoon hours, causing flooding along the Havana Malecón and other low-lying areas of the northern coastline.
- At the Casa Blanca weather station in Havana, wind gusts of up to 82 kilometers per hour were reported at 7:45 p.m. and 77 kilometers per hour at 9:30 p.m., both from the northwest.
- The maximum sustained winds in the last few hours have remained between 35 and 40 kilometers per hour.
- The waves have reached heights of over 4 meters in some areas of the Malecón.
The president of the Provincial Defense Council of Havana, Liván Izquierdo Alonso, toured the area alongside representatives from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the Fire Department, and Civil Defense. Through his account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he warned about the danger of marine incursions and urged the population to “stay informed and follow the instructions of Civil Defense.”
Measures and recommendations from the authorities
The Municipal Administration Council of Plaza de la Revolución issued a series of guidelines for the public in light of the ongoing meteorological event:
- Do not travel through flooded areas.
- Do not touch fallen electrical cables.
- Stay informed and follow the instructions of the Civil Defense.
- Prepare for a possible evacuation if conditions require it.
- Protect your life and that of your family.
- Help nearby vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly or those who live alone.
The authorities have issued a alert for coastal flooding along the entire northern coast of Havana and urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
