The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, affirmed last Thursday that his country will continue to provide support and assistance “within its capabilities” to the Cuban regime.

During a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, who arrived in the Asian giant seeking assistance after the fuel blockade imposed by the Trump Administration, Yi stated his opposition to "interference by foreign forces" on the island, according to a statement.

"China firmly supports Cuba in protecting its national sovereignty and security, (…) and rejects any attempt to deprive the Cuban people of their right to survive and develop," he added, according to the statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China and Cuba "have always maintained a sincere mutual trust and have remained united," he affirmed, alluding to the Cuban "spirit" of "standing up to power and not fearing difficulties."

In ChinaRodríguez also met with the director of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), Chen Xiaodong, and with the head of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Liu Haixing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping approved an emergency aid package for Cuba at the end of January, which includes 80 million dollars in financial assistance and a donation of 60,000 tons of rice, described as the largest announcement of its kind for the island in recent years. Additionally, in 2024, China granted a donation of 100 million dollars to Cuba.

In diplomatic terms, the Chinese government publicly urged Washington last week to immediately lift the blockade, sanctions, and any coercive measures against Cuba.

Although the Cuban regime has sought to activate support from its main partners, the uncertainty remains about  what specific type of assistance it expects to obtain  amid the situation described as a petroleum siege and increasing pressure from the United States.
