A warehouse caught fire on Thursday morning in the northwest of Miami-Dade, prompting a large response from firefighters and generating substantial columns of smoke visible in nearby areas.
The fire, classified as a fourth alarm blaze, began in a type 3PL logistics warehouse typically used for recycling and storage, located at 20600 NW 47th Ave., just outside the boundaries of Miami Gardens and approximately half a mile south of the county line. The facility is also situated west of Hard Rock Stadium, near the Florida Turnpike.
Local 10 reported that news helicopters flew over the area shortly after 11:00 AM, as emergency teams from Miami-Dade, Miami Gardens, and Miramar worked to contain the flames.
The user of Facebook Weiner Alexander Martínez shared a video showing how the fire produced dense columns of smoke visible from a great distance. The authorities reported that a large amount of chemicals was burning inside the facility, making the smoke potentially toxic.
Additionally, there were several propane tanks inside the warehouse, which increased the risk during the firefighting efforts.
Firefighters indicated that all fire hydrants and available water sources in the surrounding area are being utilized to combat the intense blaze.
A warehouse worker told local media that he feels "lucky to be alive" and noted that he believes everyone managed to exit the building when the flames started to spread.
Nearby is the Dr. Frederica S. Wilson Skyway Elementary School, located in Miami Gardens. According to county commissioner Oliver Gilbert, the facility was empty and under construction, so there were no students or staff on-site at the time of the fire.
Another nearby school, Somerset Academy in Miramar, reported that although smoke can be seen from the campus, students were moved indoors and there is no direct threat to the educational center.
The Miami Gardens police asked drivers to avoid the area between Northwest 47th Avenue and Northwest 206th Street while emergency teams continue to work in the area. So far, no injuries have been reported, and the causes of the fire are still under investigation.
