The United States and the interim authorities of Venezuela agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations between both countries, the State Department reported this Thursday.
The decision was announced in an official statement issued by the State Department, which noted that the agreement aims to facilitate joint efforts to stabilize the South American country and support its economic recovery.
According to the statement, the resumption of relations will facilitate progress in cooperation between both governments at a critical moment for the Venezuelan political process.
"The step will facilitate our joint efforts to promote stability, support economic recovery, and advance political reconciliation in Venezuela," the statement indicated.
Washington also emphasized that its commitment is focused on helping the Venezuelan people move towards a political transition through a gradual process.
According to the State Department, this process aims to create the necessary conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government.
The statement also emphasizes that the United States will continue to work with regional partners to promote stability and prosperity in Venezuela.
"The participation of the United States is focused on helping the Venezuelan people move forward through a phased process that creates the conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government," the official text added.
The announcement marks a new step in the process of normalizing relations between Washington and Caracas after years of tense relations and the suspension of diplomatic activities between the two countries.
