The Republican congressman from Florida, Carlos Giménez, stated that the political and economic pressure driven by President Donald Trump against Havana is putting the Cuban regime in a critical situation.
In recent statements to Fox News, the Cuban-American legislator assured that the island's government is experiencing one of its weakest moments after decades of power.
“Freedom cannot be silenced forever. After decades of oppression, the Cuban dictatorship is weaker than ever,” affirmed Giménez.
The congressman also emphasized that the democratic momentum within Cuba continues to grow despite repression.
"The courage of the Cuban people continues to grow, and the world is watching," he noted.
According to the representative from Florida, the pressure strategy promoted from Washington is weakening the regime's power structure.
“President Trump's pressure is pushing the Castro regime to the brink of the abyss!”, he stated.
"The fight for freedom is the work of my life."
In another public statement released this Monday, Giménez defended his political stance and explained that his commitment to the freedom of Cuba has personal roots.
"As the only member of Congress born in Cuba, the fight for freedom is not just a political stance for me. It is the work of my life," he expressed.
The legislator recalled that he emigrated from the island after the victory of the communist regime and stated that he knows firsthand the consequences of losing freedom.
“I know firsthand the cost of losing a nation to tyranny, and I am aware that the formula for freedom remains the same, regardless of language or borders,” he said.
Giménez also praised the current U.S. government's foreign policy toward authoritarian regimes.
"Under the bold leadership of President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, we are finally taking a stand against the axis of oppression that threatens our hemisphere and the world," he stated.
In his view, Washington has made it clear that its support lies with the citizens and not with authoritarian governments.
“The message is clear: the United States is firmly on the side of the people,” he emphasized.
The congressman also assured that he will continue to push from Capitol Hill for political changes in various countries.
"We will not rest until the light of democracy replaces the darkness of these oppressive regimes," he stated.
"I will continue to fight every day in the halls of Congress until we see a free Cuba, a free Venezuela, and a free Iran."
"The days of the regime are numbered."
Giménez's statements come at a time of increasing political pressure from Washington on the Cuban government and following recent remarks from Trump himself regarding the future of the island.
During a reception prior to the regional summit Escudo de las Américas, held in the city of Doral with the participation of a dozen heads of state from the hemisphere, the congressman asserted that the Cuban political system is nearing its end.
"He believes the days are drawing near. I believe the president," said Giménez, referring to Trump.
The legislator, born in Havana and having emigrated to the United States in 1960, stated that the regime is experiencing a phase of extreme fragility.
"If I had to bet, I would say that this regime's days are numbered, and I'm not talking about years, I'm talking about days," he stated.
According to their analysis, the Cuban government is currently facing an unprecedented economic and political crisis.
The congressman has also repeatedly raised in recent weeks the possibility that U.S. authorities could file charges against Raúl Castro and other high-ranking officials of the regime for alleged crimes against American citizens.
Among the cases, he mentioned the shooting down in 1996 of two aircraft from the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue, in which four people died.
