Residents of the Mantilla neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, took to the streets on Thursday night to stage a strong pot-banging protest and block a street as a sign of dissent.
Videos shared on social media show residents banging pots and shouting slogans while several people remain in the public street.
The images were shared by activist Cristhian J. González, who stated that the demonstrations are part of the seventh consecutive day of protests in various neighborhoods of Havana.
“Mantilla in the streets right now,” the user wrote while posting the videos of the protest.
In the recordings, pots and pans and voices from neighbors can be heard while some residents stay outside during the blackout.
The protest adds to other demonstrations recorded in the capital over the past few days, including pot-banging protests in El Cotorro, El Cerro, Nuevo Vedado, and other neighborhoods of Havana.
The protests have taken place amid prolonged blackouts and growing social unrest due to the energy crisis affecting the island.
In several areas of the city, the banging of pots and the burning of trash have become one of the main forms of expressing citizens' discontent with power outages and the deterioration of basic services.
