The Republican congressman Byron Donalds published a powerful video message on X this Tuesday, in which he demands the downfall of the Cuban regime, describing it as a "brutal and murderous communist dictatorship that has destroyed the freedom of the Cuban people for generations."

Donalds pointed to the Cuban government as a direct threat to the national security of the United States, just 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

The favorite candidate for governor of Florida in the November 2026 elections, backed by Donald Trump, argued that the time is ripe to force the fall of the regime because Cuba has lost the supply of Venezuelan oil following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January 2026.

"If your economy is not going to be self-sufficient, we need to tighten the screws. It's time for that regime to fall," stated the congressman.

In the video, Donalds emphasized that no previous president had the determination to end the regime, but Trump does. "Donald Trump takes the security of the western hemisphere very seriously. And that is why it is time for them to go," he stated.

The congressman also left open a negotiated exit: if the regime wants to survive, it must become a liberal democracy based on individual freedoms and constitutional rights, something that would benefit both the Cuban people and the approximately 1.6 million Cuban Americans living in Florida.

Donalds' statements come a day after Trump stated that it would be "a great honor" for him to "take Cuba," describing the island as a "failed nation."

Trump warned: "There will be an agreement or we will do what we have to do."

Cuba is going through its worst energy crisis in decades. This Monday, the island experienced a nationwide blackout, the cause of which the Díaz-Canel government admitted it does not know.

U.S. negotiators are holding talks with Havana, demanding the departure of Miguel Díaz-Canel as a condition for any agreement.

Donalds leads the Republican primary for governor of Florida with between 28% and 30% of voter intention, according to recent polls, and has made the Cuban issue a central focus of his campaign. The Florida governor's election will take place on November 3, 2026.
