Jorge Mas: "I found in Trump a man with a complete conviction to help the Cuban people achieve their freedom."

The Cuban-American businessman Jorge Mas Santos recently stated that he has found in Donald Trump a man with a total conviction to help the Cuban people achieve their freedom.

That perception was present on March 5 at the White House during the official reception for Inter Miami CF following their victory in the 2025 MLS Cup.

Mas Santos, co-owner of the club alongside his brother José and president of MasTec, shared the details of that meeting in an exclusive interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón from Martí Noticias, an interview that generated numerous headlines due to the significance of Jorge Más’s revelations.

"The meeting at the White House with President Trump and accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio (...) was a great afternoon for me because we talked about Cuba, we talked about homeland, we talked about the full freedom of the Cuban people," declared Mas Santos.

The businessman revealed that Trump spoke directly to him and his brother José during the reception, telling them:  "You are going to return... you won't need my approval, you'll just fly back. It will be a great day. We will be together again very soon, celebrating what is happening in Cuba. They desperately want to reach an agreement."

His message to the Cuban people was direct and unequivocal: "The day of freedom for our homeland is approaching".

"It is going to happen in 2026," the American leader would have stated emphatically.

Other projections about Cuba

Mas Santos outright rejected the recent measures by the Cuban regime to encourage residents abroad to invest directly in the island.

"There is no economic arrangement in Cuba, regardless of the announcements made this morning, without the rule of law," he said, adding: "GAESA today has 18 billion dollars in bank accounts, and be careful, this is all a farce."

The businessman also ruled out any comparison with the engagement policy of the Obama administration and was adamant in dismissing an agreement that would perpetuate the regime.

"I am confident that this will not be an arrangement that allows for the continuation of a murderous regime that is a failed state," he commented, and insisted that we are not seeing an Obama 2.0, but rather a policy oriented towards the freedom of the Cuban people this year.

Mas Santos also outlined an ambitious vision for Cuba's economic reconstruction following the fall of the regime, which he referred to as "the Cuban miracle."

It anticipated an inflow of between 35 billion and 45 billion dollars in capital, the construction of between 2 to 2.5 million new homes in the first three or four years, and full employment on the island.

He cited his own company, MasTec— which has 42,000 direct employees and revenue of 17 billion dollars, listed on the New York Stock Exchange— as proof of the potential of Cuban talent under a system of economic freedom.

The businessman also evoked the legacy of his father, Jorge Mas Canosa, founder of the Cuban American National Foundation, and recalled that 26 years ago he organized the first meeting between Trump and the Cuban community at the Radisson in Miami, closing a historic circle.

"We have the ability to dream" of a fully free future Cuba, a prosperous Cuba that allows Cubans to achieve their own dreams through their own work and sacrifice, without a government dictating who they are or what they can do, Mas Santos concluded.
