Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, defended on Monday the possibility of resuming the shipment of fuel to Cuba, while revealing that she had made a personal donation of 20,000 pesos to support the island amid the economic crisis facing the Caribbean nation.

During her morning conference, the head of state insisted that Mexico has "every right" to supply oil to Cuba, whether for humanitarian reasons or through trade agreements that—she mentioned—have existed for decades.

Sheinbaum explained that her government is still assessing the conditions to resume these shipments, while continuing to send humanitarian aid. In fact, she confirmed that a Mexican ship recently arrived on the island with food as part of that support.

The president also opened the door for private companies to participate in this scheme, pointing out that companies can purchase fuel from Mexico and transport it to Cuba, even without a direct agreement between governments.

In her personal endeavors, Sheinbaum revealed that she made a donation of 20,000 pesos to an account managed by the civil association “Humanidad con América Latina,” created to channel aid to the island and promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“It’s a personal decision,” he emphasized, while defending that Mexico should help “to the extent possible” other countries.

In her speech, Sheinbaum once again highlighted the historical relationship between Mexico and Cuba, emphasizing that both countries have maintained cooperative ties for decades. She also reiterated her rejection of any form of foreign intervention on the island and the economic sanctions, considering that they directly affect the population.

The statements come amid a growing debate about Mexico's role in the Cuban crisis, particularly regarding the possibility of resuming fuel shipments at a time when the island is experiencing blackouts, shortages, and a sustained deterioration of living conditions.
