Cubana de Aviación announced this Wednesday a second additional flight between Havana and Nueva Gerona, scheduled for this Thursday, July 9. The airline reiterated that reservations can only be made in person, due to the impact of the energy crisis the country is facing.
In a , the airline announced that the flight will operate the route Havana–Nueva Gerona–Havana (HAV-GER-HAV) and will depart at 12:00 p.m. from Terminal 1 of José Martí International Airport.
Those interested must go in person to Terminal 1 in Havana or to the Cubana de Aviación offices in Isla de la Juventud to manage their reservation.
"Due to the current electrical issues the country is experiencing, reserves will not be managed through other means for this specific operation," the state-owned company specified.
This is the second consecutive occasion that Cubana de Aviación has organized a special flight under these same conditions.
On Tuesday, July 7, the company announced another special operation departing at noon with reservations only available in person, just a few days after the collapse of the National Electric System (SEN) that occurred on Monday, July 6.
The electricity crisis has impacted the operation of the airline's computer and communication systems, forcing it to process reservations manually and making it difficult for passengers to manage their affairs.
Isle of Youth, among the most affected territories
The measure comes at a particularly complex time for the Isle of Youth, one of the territories most affected by the energy crisis.
During the past few weeks, residents have reported power outages of up to 22 hours a day, and at certain points in July, they have had only two hours of electricity per day. Moreover, in May, local generation capacity had dropped to 6 MW, far below the installed capacity of 48 MW.
The collapse of the National Electric System on July 6 further worsened the situation. That day, Cuba experienced its seventh total system disconnection in 18 months and the third in 2026, following the shutdown of Unit 6 at the thermal power plant in Nuevitas, Camagüey.
The interruption left a large part of the country without electricity and once again highlighted the limitations of the generation system, affected by a lack of fuel and breakdowns at several plants.
Two weekly flights
Cubana de Aviación is currently the only airline that operates regular domestic flights between Havana and the Isle of Youth.
The company resumed its two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Thursdays this February, after several months of suspension due to technical issues with its fleet.
The addition of extra flights aims to ease passenger demand while operational difficulties stemming from the energy crisis persist.
