Yomil y el Dany is a Cuban duo in the urban genre. The group was founded on August 15, 2015, and quickly captivated thousands of followers in Cuba and abroad.
It is composed of Roberto Hidalgo Puentes (Yomil), born in Havana on October 9, 1991, and Daniel Muñoz (el Dany), also from Havana, born on January 6, 1989, who sadly passed away unexpectedly on July 18, 2020.
When this duo started in 2015, Yomil was working as a mechanic and El Dany was a medical student. In 2009, they had formed a group called DpuntoD, but despite achieving moderate success in nightclubs in Havana and on social media, that project did not take off, and they parted ways in 2011.
They reunited in 2015, this time adopting lyrics and a sound that was more direct, more colloquial, and much more infectious among the fans of reggaeton and trap.
They distinguished themselves from other Cuban groups with a more aggressive strategy, in the style of American reggaeton and rap, known as traptón, perfecting it to become the pioneers of the genre on the island.
This sound that characterized them is composed of hip hop, rap, trap, and also incorporates elements of traditional Cuban music within the foundation of reggaetón.
The first single by Yomil y el Dany was called Tengo and it was a remix of Truffle Butter, a song by Nickki Minaj. The duo's debut album was Doping, released in 2015, which gained popularity with two tracks, Rikaperry and Estamos pa to’.
In 2016, they released their second album, Sobredosis, which reached top positions among Latin albums during the summer.
A year later, they were already among the leading groups in the genre and were nominated for the Billboard Latin Music Award, alongside renowned Cuban artists such as Osmani García, Pitbull, and Gente de Zona.
Yomil and El Dany recorded six albums between 2015 and 2017. Their hits were shared through the "package" of audiovisual content that is circulated underground in Cuba and via social media. In this way, they achieved extraordinary success without the support of Cuban cultural institutions.
In 2018, the video for the song You Owe Me Something changed that hostile landscape, and their music began to be heard in Cuban media. The duo gained support to perform even internationally.
Yomil y el Dany was a prolific duo from every perspective, especially in terms of their discography. Their albums have had a significant influence on urban music.
On July 18, 2020, the death of El Dany shocked Cubans both on the island and abroad. Daniel Muñoz passed away in Havana due to acute cardiovascular complications. Yomil continues his solo career.
