A Cuban woman was shot in the head this week by her son-in-law in her home in Miami Gardens, in an incident that the victim's daughter describes as a premeditated attack.
The accused, Bilal Ismail, 49 years old, former partner of the victim's daughter and father of her two children, faces charges of second-degree attempted murder and will remain in custody without bail. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.
A heart-wrenching testimony before the court
During the hearing held this Wednesday, Claudia Quintero, the victim's daughter and former partner of the accused, gave an emotional and compelling testimony before Judge Mindy S. Glazer, as revealed by America Tevé.
Amidst tears and visibly affected, Quintero stated that Ismail not only hated her mother but had also explicitly expressed his intention to kill her.
“He hated my mom, he told me on the phone, I have all the text messages, he said ‘I wanna kill your mother’”, Claudia reported to the court.
Furthermore, the woman revealed that the attack was not a spontaneous outburst, but a meticulously planned act.
According to his statement, Ismail knew when his mother would be alone in the house, which indicates a pattern of surveillance and intent behind the crime.
“He did this deliberately, he thought it through... he follows my steps, the GPS was in my car and he knew where I was, that's why he entered through an open door, cut the cameras, I have all this”, he added.
A history of harassment and surveillance
Claudia Quintero had a nine-year relationship with Ismail, with whom she had two children. The relationship ended in August 2024 after discovering his infidelity.
Since then, according to her, the harassment has not stopped.
She reported that the man – whose nationality has not been disclosed – has continuously stalked her and even installed a GPS device in her vehicle to monitor her movements.
“I have cameras with recordings from four times, which put a GPS in my car,” he stated.
This behavior, according to Claudia, created a climate of constant fear for her and her children, to the point that today she fears for their lives.
The attack and the capture
On Monday morning, Ismail headed to his mother-in-law's residence, located at 4400 Northwest 203rd Terrace, in Miami Gardens.
Once there, he shot the woman in the head, causing her to suffer extremely serious injuries. The bullet passed through the victim's throat and reached her abdomen, leaving her in critical condition.
After the attack, the assailant fled the scene in a Ford F-150 truck. The chase lasted nearly 24 hours until he was located at a gas station near the crime scene.
A security video captured the moment when Ismail, driving a Toyota RAV, arrived at the establishment followed by patrol cars.
In the images, he is seen descending from the vehicle with his torso exposed, walking backward with his hands raised, in a gesture of surrender.
Without the right to bail and under custody
During the hearing, Judge Glazer determined that there were sufficient grounds to deny bail.
The decision was based on the severity of the offense, the risk of flight, and the potential danger the accused poses to the victim and their family environment.
Ismail's next appearance before the court is scheduled for Thursday, while the police continue to gather evidence to clarify all the details of the case.
For now, the victim is hospitalized at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where, although conscious and aware, she cannot speak and is facing a long and complex recovery.
