The ruling Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed feeling "dismayed" by the traffic accidents that occurred this weekend in Matanzas and Ciego de Ávila.

“Distressed by the terrible traffic accidents that occurred in Matanzas and Ciego de Ávila. In this difficult moment, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. We remain attentive to the care of the injured and their families,” wrote Díaz-Canel on X, who has been attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil since this weekend.

Accident at the Varadero toll booth

Two people died on Saturday after the car they were traveling in crashed into the barrier wall of the Varadero tollbooth.

Rubén Lantigua, who resided in the United States and was originally from Corralillo, Villa Clara, and Amanda Naranjo Pino, originally from Perico and residing in Cantel, passed away this Saturday after the car they were traveling in crashed at high speed into an obstacle.

Although local media indicate that Rubén is 69 years old, the testimony provided to CiberCuba specifies that Lantigua is 33 and Amanda Naranjo is 30. The young woman was a mother to a little girl.

Sources assert that Rubén Lantigua, who was driving the car, does not consume alcoholic beverages, thereby dispelling rumors circulating on social media suggesting that the driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident.

The incident occurred around 5:40 PM, when a private vehicle traveling from Varadero to Boca de Camarioca lost control and violently crashed into the masonry dividing wall near the toll booth.

Witnesses reported that the car was moving at high speed when it crashed into the toll booth.

The impact was so strong that it was lifted into the air, fell and split in two. One of the halves caught fire and caused an explosion visible from various points in the area.

The director of the National Highway Center, Sandra Loureiro, clarified that the part of the car that caught fire rolled towards the toll booth area.
