An incident that occurred Thursday night in front of the iconic Versailles restaurant in Miami left two people injured during a demonstration in support of the freedom and rights of the Cuban people.
According to the Miami Fire Rescue, the incident occurred when a driver experienced a medical emergency while driving with his wife in a vehicle. As a result, he lost control and accidentally struck a protester, who fell on top of another person.
Telemundo 51 reported that the three individuals involved —the driver and the two people who were struck— are in stable condition after the incident. However, several of them were taken to a nearby hospital for a more detailed medical evaluation.
The firefighters emphasized that there are no signs of intentionality in the incident, ruling out that it was a deliberate act against the participants of the protest.
The incident occurred during a peaceful gathering that brought together dozens of Cubans in South Florida, who were demanding respect for fundamental rights on the island and an end to the regime's repression.
This type of demonstration has become frequent in Miami, where the Cuban community maintains an active stance of protest against the political, economic, and social crisis facing Cuba.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident, although all indications point to an accidental event caused by the driver's medical condition, who is an elderly person.
