A mother and her eight-year-old daughter lost their lives after being struck by a car this Tuesday in Santa Clara, in the province of Villa Clara, according to reports on social media.
The tragic traffic accident occurred on the Central Highway, near the bus terminal in the city, on the night of December 30th. Relatives identified the victims as Liliana Carbonell Cueto, 46 years old, and her younger daughter, Elisabet Isel Díaz Carbonell.
The mother was crossing the avenue with the little girl when they were struck by a vehicle driven by a Cuban resident in the United States who is visiting Cuba.
The woman died at the scene, while the minor was taken to the pediatric hospital in Santa Clara, where she passed away on December 31.
The causes of the accident have not been clarified. Relatives of the victims point to the driver as responsible, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and at high speed.
Meanwhile, others have pointed to "a possible recklessness on the part of the mother and daughter, attempting to cross the road thinking they would have enough time," reflected a post by activist Irma Broek.
But so far, the authorities have not provided official information about this tragic event, which has left the victims' families in mourning and caused shock in the community.
Devastated by the loss of his young daughter, Ionel Díaz Suárez, the father of the girl, has shared moving messages dedicated to Elisabet Isel.
“Fly my Angel, fly my daughter, don’t stop because you are already in the arms of God the Father, even though you left your dad and family shattered by your departure, but I am proud of the daughter I had (...) You will always be in my heart, my Elisabet Isel, my little girl. I will always miss you, my beautiful girl. I love you and I promise to never forget you; it’s impossible to forget you, being who you were to everyone,” he expressed in one of the heartfelt messages honoring the memory of his beloved daughter.
The relatives of Liliana and Elisabet Isel are calling on the authorities for a serious investigation into the case and for justice to be served for both of them. Liliana leaves behind two teenage orphans, aged 17.
