Traffic accidents continue to leave a trail of mourning in January: the most recent incident, reported early this Monday on the National Highway, near the municipality of Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, resulted in the deaths of two people, including a 13-year-old girl.
According to preliminary reports on social media, the collision between a car and a bus allegedly from the National Bus Company resulted in two fatalities and at least two serious injuries.
Unfortunately, in the accident, the girl Diamela Gómez Cepero lost her life. She was traveling in the car with her parents, Dany Gómez and Yasmery Cepero. They were urgently transferred to Faustino Pérez Hospital in Matanzas and are in critical condition, reported the activist Irma Broek. All are originally from Santa Clara, in the Villa Clara province.
Relatives confirmed the passing of the young girl on Facebook: “My 13-year-old cousin was in that car, where she lost her life, and my cousin and her husband, who are the girl's parents, are in serious condition at the hospital in Matanzas. Rest in peace, my beautiful girl, you have no idea how you've left us," expressed Yuset Alfonso.
The driver of the car, identified as Freddy Wong, also died in the incident. He was also from the capital of Villa Clara, according to sources close to him, as reported by the La Tijera page on social media.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m. as the car was leaving Jagüey Grande heading to Havana. The causes that led to the incident are still unknown; and so far, there has been no official information regarding the tragic event or the total number of victims.
Witnesses reported a large movement of ambulances in the area following the incident that has brought sorrow to two Cuban families.
January has been a month marked by numerous fatal accidents across various provinces in the country. One of the most severe occurred in Moa, Holguín, where six people lost their lives and five others were injured.
