Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes, 33 years old, lost her life last Saturday in a violent boating accident in Biscayne Bay, a事件 that has left those who knew her both within and outside the migrant community in shock.

According to authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the woman was a passenger on a 27-foot vessel when, for reasons still under investigation, both she and the boat operator were thrown into the water, according to a report from CBS News.

The vessel, out of control, kept moving and ended up striking them. Balmaseda was found lifeless in the water, while the driver, identified as Neil D. Schwabe, 54 years old, was rescued with injuries and airlifted to a hospital.

The accident occurred around 10:40 in the morning, in an area near West Point, in waters frequented by recreational boats. A video that was later released shows the boat spinning in circles with no one on board, just seconds before authorities managed to stop it, a scene that highlights the violence of the event, reported Telemundo 51.

But beyond the details of the accident, what has impacted the most is the personal story of the victim. Balmaseda had emigrated from Cuba just three years ago in search of a better life. She worked as an insurance agent and followed a routine marked by effort and discipline, as her roommate, Mayra Echevarría, told NBC Miami.

“She would wake up every morning at seven, go to work, and return in the evening. She was a responsible person, always greeting everyone with a smile,” he recalled. “I miss her so much, I can't believe something like this happened so quickly, at such a young age,” he said.

The tragedy also occurs in a troubling context: it is the second fatal boating accident in Biscayne Bay in less than a week. Days earlier, a father died and his son was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in the same area, raising alarms about safety in these waters.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the causes of the accident and have reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets and taking precautionary measures before going out to sea.

Meanwhile, the Cuban community in South Florida mourns the loss of a young woman who, like many others, left the island in search of opportunities and ended up encountering a tragic fate far from home.
