"The young blonde" who "was retracing Santa Clara": The heartfelt tribute from the CTC leader to Díaz-Canel

Someday, not too far off, a monument should be erected to the ridiculousness, flattery, and agricultural lyricism with which Cuban leaders systematically exchange mutual praises.

In this instance, Osnay Miguel Colina, president of the organizing committee for the XXII Congress of the Central Workers' Union of Cuba (CTC), published an impassioned ode to Miguel Díaz-Canel in which he depicts him as nothing less than a hero: "the young blond [who] rode through Santa Clara on a bicycle at any hour, in the darkness of the blackout or the early morning hours" during the 90s; the one who cut sugarcane, harvested coffee in the mountains, and faced hurricanes.

Those who say that Canel "came out of nowhere," that he lacks "political substance" are mistaken, Colina stated. They forget that during the Special Period, he had to "face the bullets" [...] "and that he rose up to continue creating and founding, pushing a country forward." By the way, among the pushes to the country given by the writer and namesake of both, Miguel Barnet, and those of the "young blonde," one can understand why it seems that the Island has been falling down a ravine.

The post, accompanied by photographs from various stages of Canel's political career, does not hold back on exclamation marks: "How many times did he climb to the Escambray in the midst of floods from any cyclone, how many times did he visit bakeries, factories, and schools with the sole protocol of a man trying to understand the needs of every corner!"

It goes on to recount Canel's time as the first secretary of the PCC in the province of Holguín, where, he claims, "he earned the affection of a people who did not see him born; however, they welcomed him with the respect and gratitude that also made him a son of the homeland of Fidel and Raúl."

And, as could not be otherwise, the epic poem of praise for "Canel" culminates in the current situation, where it portrays the Homeric hero "at the epicenter of a war that seeks by all means to subdue or ridicule him, but they forget that, as he has confessed in his most recent exchange with the American media NBC News: 'the concept of revolutionaries does not include surrendering'."

The patriotic verses culminate with the hashtags "#YoSigoAMiPresidente" and "#LaPatriaSeDefiende". This latter serves as the central rallying cry with which, hours before the "declaration of love" to the leader, Colina had launched, on behalf of the CTC, the official call for May 1, 2026, with a bellicose tone that reflects the tension between the White House and the Palace of the Revolution.

It seems that the current leader of the CTC ignores the adjective with which, from Pinar del Río to Guantánamo, many Cubans refer to the "young blond", appointed as president by Raúl Castro in 2018. He also must not have seen on social media the spontaneous public polls that were organized to cordially invite him to step down, in accordance with what he expressed in the interview with NBC News, that it should be the people who assessed his suitability.

Ah, pamphlet love stories, what affectionate poetry will the people bestow upon them when it is they who decide to push them out of the country.
