Four deceased identified in accident in Sancti Spíritus: Two injured remain in serious condition

Cuban authorities identified this Friday the four individuals who died in the mass accident that occurred on the National Highway in Sancti Spíritus, which also left 17 injured, two of whom are in serious condition.

The incident occurred around 11:00 PM on Thursday, near kilometer 336, close to the bridge over the Zaza River, when a bus of the Diana brand traveling from Havana to the eastern provinces was involved in an event whose causes have not yet been officially determined.

According to information provided by the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital to the newspaper Escambray, the deceased victims were identified as: 

  • Edilberto Aldana García, 23 years old and resident of Vertientes, Camagüey
  • Conrado Peña López, 58 years old, from Santiago de Cuba 
  • Niurka de la Caridad Argelí Ladisté, 56 years old, Santiago de Cuba
  • Ualter Chávez Galán, 30 years old, originally from Cauto, Granma  

Everyone died at the scene of the accident

Doctor Malena Morera Campos, head of Therapies and Emergencies at the hospital, specified that the two critically ill patients underwent surgery.  

One presents with severe traumatic brain injury, with a fracture of the frontal bone, while the other suffered right hemothorax and liver laceration

Among the injured is a five-year-old boy, admitted to the José Martí Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital, with no serious injuries reported.

The rest of the injured are progressing favorably and remain under medical observation. According to the specialist, the evolving ultrasounds and other procedures performed show no complications at this time.

Provincial authorities visited the healthcare institution and assured that the hospital has the necessary human and material resources to care for patients, including blood donations.

They also reported that once the medical clearance is received, arrangements will be made for the transfer of the injured individuals to their home provinces.

The police are conducting an investigation to clarify the causes of the tragic accident, which once again highlights the vulnerability of road safety on the highways of Cuba.
